Customization can be dangerous, which is why safety is a fundamental pillar that should not be overlooked. From exposure to chemicals and handling machinery to handling sensitive materials, every step requires caution and knowledge.

At Brildor, not only do we provide you with top-quality tools and materials, but we also want you to customize with the utmost safety. In this post, you’ll discover key safety measures to keep your work environment safe and efficient.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Gloves

The use of gloves is essential to protect your hands during the customization process. If you work with sublimation, we recommend heat-resistant , flame-retardant and non-slip gloves. These are ideal for safely handling ovens and transfer plates, protecting your hands from burns.

Also, the use of latex or nitrile gloves is essential when handling inks, both for hygienic and protective reasons. Be sure to use them especially during machine cleaning and ink change to avoid any contact.

For the DTF technique, where polyurethane powder is handled, the risk to the skin is low. However, prolonged exposure over long periods of time may cause irritation. In these cases, wearing gloves can minimize direct contact with the chemicals, protecting your skin from possible irritation.

Safety glasses

Laser cutting and engraving, thanks to affordable machines such as the Xtool F1, has become popular for homes and small businesses alike. Given the intensity of the laser light, it is crucial to wear proper eye protection.

It is important to select specific glasses with full side protection. You should choose them according to the type of laser your machine uses: diode lasers operate between 180 and 540 nm, while diode, infrared and CO2 lasers range from 190 to 460 nm and from 800 to 1100 nm. Also check to see if your machine includes a laser protection screen built into the lid, which may eliminate the need for additional eyewear.

In addition, in personalization techniques where chemicals, inks or toxic fumes are handled, we recommend the use of transparent and closed safety glasses to avoid ink splashes and eye irritation from fumes.

Masks

It is essential to use appropriate masks to work with the different customization techniques that generate volatile chemicals or toxic gases.

In the DTF technique, respiratory protection is especially important in poorly ventilated areas. DTF dust, composed of fine polyurethane particles, can remain suspended in the air and be inhaled, which in the long term can cause health problems if proper protection is not used.

In addition, processes such as sublimation or DTF involving the heating of inks generate gases. Therefore, it is essential to use face masks and ensure good ventilation to avoid inhalation of these vapors.

Machine manufacturers are increasing safety measures in their equipment to mitigate these risks. A prime example is the ColorBoost DTF oven, which includes an air filtration system with HEPA filter and activated carbon filter, capable of absorbing harmful gases and unpleasant odors. Similarly, Xtool machines offer the option of purchasing an air filter that combines a HEPA H13 filter with an activated carbon filter, strengthening the protection of the working environment.

Ergonomics

Work in product customization often involves repetitive motions and the use of force, which can lead to repetitive strain injuries and muscle fatigue if not handled properly. Good posture must be maintained, but so is the use of machinery designed to minimize physical exertion.

For this reason, we recommend investing in machinery that facilitates these tasks and reduces the risk of injury. Automatic and pneumatic irons are excellent examples, since they perform the same work with less physical effort. In addition, ergonomic accessories for vinyl stripping tasks can make a significant difference.

Implementing these tools not only improves your safety and well-being, but also increases productivity and work quality.

Preventive measures in the work environment

Proper ventilation and filter maintenance

Adequate ventilation is necessary in the customizing environment, particularly in processes that generate vapors or use chemicals. Working in well-ventilated areas, together with waste management systems, is essential to prevent the accumulation of noxious vapors and toxic wastes.

Installing adequate extraction systems and maintaining a constant air flow are key measures to reduce health risks to workers.

In addition, it is vital to regularly change the filters of the personalization machines. This will ensure that these systems function optimally, effectively protecting you against the inhalation of hazardous substances.

Workspace organization

Maintaining a neat and clean workspace is essential not only to improve operational efficiency, but also to minimize the risk of accidents. Having all tools and materials properly stored and safely accessible can prevent falls and other incidents.

In addition, ergonomics plays a very important role in the configuration of the workspace. It is advisable to adjust the height of the machines to match the height and needs, ensuring comfortable and safe access.

Careful selection of materials

It is essential to select inks, films, vinyls… from reliable suppliers that comply with all current regulations and have the required safety certificates. Using certified materials not only guarantees the quality of your final products, but also protects health.

Fire extinguishers

Having a fire extinguisher on hand is necessary, especially when using electrical and heat machines in customization processes that may present fire hazards. Aware of this need, Xtool has introduced an advanced fire safety system designed specifically for its machines.

Xtool’s fire safety system is equipped with automatic flame detection, using five sensors and algorithms to monitor light, temperature and position inside the enclosed laser machine. When fire is detected, it triggers an audible alarm and to control the fire, the system automatically cuts power and releases CO2, effectively and safely extinguishing the fire without leaving toxic residues.
