Why are personalised socks in fashion?

Personalisation has reached every corner of the wardrobe, and socks are no exception. Their low cost, the ability to create eye-catching designs, and their value as an original gift make them very appealing for brands, content creators, promotional events, or personalised gift shops. They are perfect for selling individually or in packs and pair well with seasonal campaigns: Christmas, Valentine's Day, Father's Day...

How are socks customised?

The most common method is sublimation, as it allows the entire surface of the sock to be covered with full-colour designs. For this, it is important to use socks made with a high proportion of polyester and preferably in white or very light colours, to ensure good colour transfer.

There are also other methods such as textile vinyl, embroidery, or direct printing, although they are not as popular for this particular product due to the shape, type of fabric, and the comfort of the finish.

Steps for sublimating socks

  1. Choose the right socks: they should contain at least 80% polyester and have suitable elasticity. Avoid those with terry cloth inside, as they may cause marking issues.
  2. Prepare the design: consider the size and shape of the stretched stocking. You can use a template to simplify the design process and ensure everything fits well. Remember to design both sides.
  3. Print the design on sublimation paper: use sublimation ink and a compatible printer. Ensure the print is in mirror mode.
  4. Place the stocking flat on the press: some models come with an interior cardboard or you can use special moulds to keep them flat and wrinkle-free.
  5. Iron at the appropriate temperature and time: typically between 190-200°C for 30-40 seconds. Medium pressure. Iron one side first and then the other.
  6. Allow to cool and remove the mould/cardboard: your personalised socks are now ready to be delivered or sold.
